During World War II, the US Army Air Forces fielded two distinctive "twin-boom" fighters -- the Lockheed "P-38 Lightning" and the Northrop "P-61 Black Widow ". The P-38 was one of the most important American fighters of the Second World War. Although its operational record was somewhat mixed, in general the P-38 was a fast, powerful, and capable aircraft that performed well in a wide range of roles. The P-61 night fighter was a bigger and more imposing aircraft, though it arrived too late in the conflict to have much influence on the war. This document provides a history and description of the P-38 -- along with its “XP-49” and “XP-58” derivatives -- and the P-61 -- along with its "F-15A Reporter" reconnaissance derivative.

For the entranced P-38 buff this is nutritious and satisfying. And, for the aero-scientist-techno-historian, there's enough to intrigue.

Lots of details about the specs about the different generations of the lightning. Good reading for a WW2 aircraft buff like myself.
Brief but concise history of a fascinating airplane. An entertaining read about a revolutionary design that later inspired car designers in the 50s.
I love the p38, and reading about it here in a fairly technical approach was well worth it. Adding the P61 is really nice as well,g given its fairly mythological reputation and scant history. Fun read.
