SKATEBOARD BLUES is a spirited young adult romance book that is sure to grasp any young teenage girl's attention. Ms. Voeller has captured the art of suspension, realistic dialog, as well as well-established characters. Her entertaining story teaches the reader the responsibilities that teenager's have regarding family, friends, the law, and themselves.

MOM'S NOTE I found the story charming and believable, reminding me of a favorite movie from my own teen years-a 2000 version of FOOTLOOSE, with skateboarding exchanged for dancing. Your daughters will enjoy this, mine did, and with all the skateboarding and such, the boys just might like it too, despite the "mushy girl/boy stuff."

Skateboard Blues is both a coming of age story and a romance, not to mention a touch of suspense. There is also a strong sister-sister relationship, showing both their support of one another and their occasional antagonisms. The characters are well-defined and the plot is fast-paced.The story is a great read for tweens, teens and adults who enjoying returning to this time of their lives. Highly recommended.

This was a very enjoyable book.Perfect for teens,tweens and the young at heart.It's a clean young romance with a lot lessons in life to learn.
Jessica Williams is smitten with the new nextdoor guy,Cam Easton.They become quick friends and love skateboarding.Cam is a skateboard champion and shows Jess his moves.The more time they spend together the more they are both smitten with each other.
Jess's father is running for mayor and some of Jess's friends tell her that Cam is just using her for her fathers pull in getting a skateboard park set up in the town.Added to that drama is other kids in the town doing graffiti on the walls of buildings and the towns people blaming it on the skaters.
Cam and Jess pull together to help paint over the graffiti and set the record straight that they are good kids and just want to have a place to skate.With the help of a few others they set out to build the trust of the town.
This was a fun read with wonderful characters.A learning experience that will change your mind about stereotyping others.
Skateboard Blues is a sweet, light read that is sure to hit the hearts of readers. It's a story that proves it is the quality, not the quantity, of pages that really count.
Voeller uses an authentic teenage voice that is more realistic than poetic, which I really enjoyed. Although the writing is still lovely, it's refreshing to read from a more accurate point of view in that crazy age range. Reading through this point of view was a great experience, and young readers will definitely be able to connect.
The plot and themes of Skateboard Blues can be connected to Footloose (which I like because it was the first play that I saw live). It deeply touches the issue of discrimination against groups of people or certain hobbies without actual knowledge about the subject. Whether it be dancers or skaters, this idea of loving something that many others don't approve of can be relayed with just about any generation.
Despite the fact that we all can enjoy the steamy love scenes of some upper YA, it's nice to have a young romance that is completely sweet. In Skateboard Blues, the sediment of being in a relationship with someone who could also be a friend is in tact, and it's heartwarming.
Some parts could have been expanded a bit on, but - all in all - Skateboard Blues is a great light read to spend the afternoon with. It shows the power of bringing a community together to really bring change, and what can be done when one doesn't give up.
